Namma Metro, also called Bengaluru Metro, is a rapid transit system run by the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL). It began operations on 20 October 2011, becoming South India's first metro system. Today it spans nearly 77 km with two major lines and serves over 760,000 commuters each weekday.

History & Launch Dates

  • Early Vision (1977–2003): Plans date back to 1977, with a feasibility study by Southern Railway in 1981. In 2003, DMRC was commissioned to draft detailed plans.
  • Foundation (2006): Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh laid the foundation stone on 24 June 2006.
  • Phase 1 Opening (2011–2017):
    • 20 October 2011: First stretch (Baiyyappanahalli–MG Road) opened.
    • 1 March 2014: Green Line section (Sampige Road–Peenya Industry) began service.
    • 19 June 2017: Completion of Phase 1, linking Purple and Green Lines.

  • Green Line: North-south corridor (33.5 km, 30 stations)
  • Ready Soon: Yellow Line (RV Road–Bommasandra, 18.82 km, 16 stations)

    • Pink Line (Kalena Agrahara–Nagawara, 21.25 km, 20 stations)
    • Blue Line (KR Puram–Hebbal–Airport, 37 km, 29 stations)

  • Key Corridors:
    • Red Line: Hebbal–Sarjapur (37 km)
    • Orange and Grey Lines: Internal loops for city-wide coverage
